Gadgets for April 2009

This month we have tested 3 different fabric marking gadgets and hope you’ll find one that best suites your quilting needs

White Marking Pen (Fine) by Clover

Dene: Diane introduced me to this marking pencil about two years ago. It does leave a fine white line which you can see on medium to dark colors. I like the fact that you always have a very fine point. It will disappear with a hot iron, a good feature.

Dene's Rating:

Diane: This pen leaves a bright white fine mark on any medium to dark colored fabrics. It does take about a minute before the markings are clear. The feature that I like the most is that the marking line disappears when a hot iron is applied to the fabric & leaves no residue. Another good feature of this pencil is that you can easily see the amount of white ink left in the pen. The label cautions to first check on a piece of scrap fabric first but I’ve used this pen for about 3 years with great success. I just love this pen.

Extra fine Mechanical Chalk Pencil, 0.9mm by Bohin

Dene: I purchased the pen with white lead and then purchased the black lead separately. I also think it is lead even though it states it is chalk. It is a bit pricey but will last a very long time. It does give a very fine line.

Dene's Rating:

Diane: This pen has lead refills in both dark and white chalk (I still think it’s just lead though). While I found this pen does give a nice fine marking line, the cost is a bit steep -- pen comes with white chalk but dark chalk must be purchased separately. Replacing chalk in the pen was quite easy & the refills should last through many markings, which is a plus.

Mechanical Chalk Pencil -- Wax free by Bohin

"These chalk cartridges are special because, in addition to precise line markings one can also carry out exact point marking on a wide range of surfaces. The cartridges come break-proof packed, are economical in use and can be easily changed to the patented holder mechanism".

Dene: These cartridges do mark with a precise fine line. I tried to mark without placing it in the pencil holder and I did break several but in the holder they will not break. I do like this marker since it will brush off the fabric and comes with 8 colors, easy to use and easy to remove the cartridges from the holder.

It also comes with a pencil sharpener to keep a sharp point.

Dene's Rating:

Diane: The packaging description above is accurate. The set comes with 8 white cartridges & 1 each of 8 other colors plus a chalk sharpener. I could not consistently get fine marking lines with sharpening frequently but if this isn’t important to you then this set will be a gadget that you’ll use for years before looking for replacement cartridges. Adding and removing the cartridges from the hold is quite easy -- YEA!
