Gadget for October 2009

Clover Quick Yo Yo Maker

Blonnie: This gadget was specifically designed for those of you that are yo yo fanatics. It is a great tool if you put yo yos on everything. Compared to the usual cardboard round template, this maker is more accurate and can be controlled better in your hands. It is fairly simple to use and the only trouble I had was when I popped the circle out of the disc, I found it awkward handling the fabric circle to start gathering it up to become the yo yo. With practice I am sure it would become easier. I have to say, it did make a nice yo yo. I used the small maker, and I also have a petite. My advice would be that before you invest in this gadget, find someone who already has one and try it out.

Carla: I'm sure that this never happens to other quilters, but along with various other notions and such, Blonnie and I both bought 2 different sizes of the Clover yo yo makers at the quilt show 2 years ago and pretty much forgot about hem. However, in the spirit of using what you have and a bit of guilt that 2 years had had passed since that quilt show, I am happy to say that after a bit of searching, I found my yo yo makers and actually opened the packages and tried them. My very limited past experience making yo yos was using the traditional method of making a template the size you wanted, cutting circles of fabric, basting a small seam allowance around the circle, and pulling the thread to gather the fabric until the opening was very small. I admit that I wasn't so crazy about this and wondered how in the world those women and young girls back in the day would have the patience to make enough yo yos to then sew together to cover a bed. I couldn't even seem to cut the right size circle in the first place to make the yo yo the size I wanted and no two were ever the same size and rarely were nice and flat.

However, this clever gadget makes it so easy. The fabric can be rotary cut in a square instead of a precise circle, then trimmed quickly to shape. The template holds the fabric in place during stitching. Precut holes in the template make sure every stitch is the right size and placed at the right distance for a perfect center. It isn’t necessary to be as precise in turning under the fabric edge. I used the "Large" size which makes a 1 3/4" finished yo yo and a 5" fabric square was perfect to use (think Charm Squares). The biggest advantage of using this product is that it really does save time compared to using a homemade template. It also comes in 4 sizes for round shapes as well as various sizes for heart and flower shaped yo yos. If you’re planning to make more than a very few fabric yo yos, this gadget is well worth the investment.
