Companion Angle
and
Easy Angle

by EZ Quilting

Blonnie: I took a class from Darlene Zimmerman a couple of years ago and was introduced to both the Companion Angle and the Easy Angle Ruler. Darlene Zimmerman designed the Companion Angle. Boy oh Boy, what did I do without them before! The Companion Angle makes perfect triangles for setting and hourglass blocks, etc. The Easy Angle makes the best half square triangles you will ever make and easy as can be. Darlene’s simple instructions on how to use the rulers made construction of the quilt easy and simple. You just cut and turn, cut and turn which makes very little waste of fabric. And you won’t scream when your Half Square and Triangles are wrong sizes and distorted. I will be bringing the quilt I made in Darlene’s class for you all to look at the next guild meeting and of course Carla and I will demonstrate these wonderful tools!

Carla: These rulers aren't new to the quilting scene but I know that there are lots of quilters out there who have not yet been introduced to them. I was surprised to learn how few participants in a workshop taught by Bonnie Hunter in Athens recently were familiar with these rulers. I've been using the Easy Angle for quite a while and find it exceptionally suited to my math addled brain. It is designed to easily cut half square triangles from strips of fabric. Whatever size the half square triangle unit is unfinished, then that is the width of the cut strip. Another useful feature of the Easy Angle is that one of the points of the triangle is always trimmed for you during the cutting process. That makes feeding the triangle under the sewing machine foot a breeze. Layering your fabrics with right sides together gives you pairs of triangles ready to sew. Besides half square triangles, this tool can also be use to cut squares and rectangles. There are 3 sizes of Easy Angles- small, medium, and large. I have the small and medium size and find for the size of blocks I typically make, I use the small one most often.

The Companion Angle is easy and useful to make quarter square triangles such as what is used in Hourglass blocks. This single tool can cut 1" to 10" quarter square triangles. By using the finished triangle base size, it is easy to determine what size strip to cut by the markings on the ruler. The numbers and lines are clearly marked. As with the Easy Angle, a trimmed triangle point and the ability to layer fabrics for pairs of triangles ready to sew is a plus.
